Loading the engine

The Lauenburger Elbschiffahrtsmuseum received a new exhibit in June 2011 when an old 25-ton marine engine made its last journey by low-loader. The event was celebrated on the streets of Lauenburg’s old quarter. The engine was loaded at the shipyard bright and early at 8 o’clock that morning. What takes half an hour by foot, though, takes six hours by heavy-goods transport. Manoeuvring the load through the narrow lanes proved just how skilful the haulier’s trade can be. At the same time, a 160-ton crane was set up in front of the museum to lift the engine to its final resting place. Despite warnings of the heavy arrival days before, several illegally parked cars still managed to block the route, but with the help of the police, the problem was solved in time. The spectators at the spectacle and the deep satisfaction of the museum management left a big impression at the end of the day.
